Americans are now getting a better idea of who has signed up for health care insurance through the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare. The southern states of Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana and Alabama are reported to have the largest amount of African Americans enrolled in the new health care reform program.

Southern states lead

In Mississippi, 59 percent of health care insurance buyers were African Americans, followed by Georgia at 38 percent, Louisiana at 37 percent, and Alabama at 29 percent, according to information released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The total number of African Americans enrolled in Obamacare is 625,000. So far.

More to come

However, this number is likely to be much higher when more data is published. Only 36 states were included in the report. States like California and New York who were not included in the report will have a significant impact on the count since they have a high concentration of minorities in their population.

So far, African Americans represent 16 percent of the total number of Americans enrolled in Obamacare.
