Stilettos are in! The higher the heel, the more fashionable they are. Everywhere you look, women are donning high heels with heel heights anywhere from 1.5 inches up to 4 or 5 inches, and in extreme cases, up to 8 inches. They are worn for every occasion, too, not just for formal events. This means more women are wearing more high heels more often. 

Why Women Like Wearing High Heels

High heels are known to date as far back as 1000 B.C. The styles have changed throughout the years, but the reason why women wear them remains the same. Women wear high heels for no other reason than to look more beautiful. Heels make a woman’s legs look longer and accentuate the calves, they make women look taller and make the bust look larger. Most women, in spite of how much high heels hurt their feet, are not about to give them up. Besides hurting the feet, there are more serious health hazards to consider that are caused by wearing high heels.

What High Heels Can Do to Your Feet and Body

The higher the heel, the more likely it is that women in heels are actually walking on the balls of their feet. If you think this can’t be good, you are right. The damage can go far beyond just pain, corns, bunions and callouses. Here are just some of the more serious conditions that can result from wearing high heels:

  • Hammertoes (also known as metatarsalgia) is a medical condition where the feet muscles tighten and cause the toes to remain curled in a downward position.
  • Osteoarthritis, a degeneration of the cartilage of the joints, can occur in the knees caused by pressure on the knees from high heels.
  • Back pain, as well as pain in the shoulder and neck, results from high heels changing the normal posture, bending the spine in order to keep balanced in high heels. Increased pressure on the back can lead to damaged vertebrates.

How to Reduce the Health Risks Without Giving Up the Pumps

  • If you must wear high heels, make sure you buy a pair that are not too small and are comfortable.
  • Limit the amount of time you spend in high heels, especially walking and standing. Try wearing walking shoes to work and change into pumps when you get to your work area.
  • When trying on high heels, do it at the end of the day when your feet are slightly swollen. This will help avoid buying shoes that are going to be too small.
  • Never run in high heels.


High heels may be hot, but so is good health. Think long term. Those sexy heels may look good on your feet today, but are they worth all the pain and damage to your body that will occur later?
